For a custom bag, those inputs often extend beyond the visible shell fabric:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>main shell and contrast panels;<\/li><li>lining and pocketing;<\/li><li>foam, board, reinforcement and interlining;<\/li><li>zipper chain, tape, slider and puller;<\/li><li>webbing, elastic, cord and binding;<\/li><li>buckles, adjusters, hooks, rings, rivets and feet;<\/li><li>sewing thread and functional tapes where control is necessary;<\/li><li>printed, embroidered or attached branding components;<\/li><li>woven labels, care labels, size or product labels;<\/li><li>individual packing materials and product-specific inserts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact list depends on the design. Adding rows merely to make the BOM look detailed is not useful. The drawing should show zipper location and opening length. A section view may show how the zipper tape is captured by the shell and lining. A sewing or construction note can define the relevant edge finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting every instruction into a single BOM description produces long cells that are difficult to revise and easy to misread. Splitting one decision across unrelated files is also risky. The practical solution is cross-reference: stable BOM ID, matching drawing callout and, where needed, a detail-page reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fields_that_make_a_bag_BOM_usable\"><\/span>Fields that make a bag BOM usable<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each row should contain enough information to identify, source and approve the item. Common fields include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Item ID:<\/strong> a unique code used across drawings and comments.<\/li><li><strong>Category:<\/strong> shell, lining, reinforcement, zipper, hardware, label or packaging.<\/li><li><strong>Part and location:<\/strong> what the item is and where it is used.<\/li><li><strong>Specification:<\/strong> material construction, size, finish or other controlling description.<\/li><li><strong>Color:<\/strong> approved color name, code or physical reference.<\/li><li><strong>Source or reference:<\/strong> nominated supplier, factory-sourced status, sample card or approved swatch ID.<\/li><li><strong>Usage:<\/strong> quantity per bag or another controlled consumption basis where applicable.<\/li><li><strong>Approval status:<\/strong> proposed, sampled, approved, rejected or awaiting decision.<\/li><li><strong>Alternative rule:<\/strong> prohibited, buyer approval required or a defined equivalent permitted.<\/li><li><strong>Revision reference:<\/strong> the version or change record that introduced the current requirement.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bagslebon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/factory-usable-bag-bom-row.png\" alt=\"Fields in a factory-usable bag BOM row\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Identification, specification, source and status answer different production questions. One vague description cannot replace them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every company needs the same column names. What matters is whether the record prevents the next person in the process from guessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Generic_material_names_are_not_enough\"><\/span>Generic material names are not enough<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPolyester,\u201d \u201ccanvas\u201d or \u201cmesh\u201d names a family, not a controlled material. Depending on the product, the BOM may need to record construction or weight, coating or backing, finish, hand feel target, color reference, approved swatch and intended location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The level of control should match the product risk. A stock promotional bag may not require a nominated mill code. A retail bag with a specific structure, surface appearance or color relationship may require a much tighter reference system. If the sample uses one slider but the BOM lists only \u201cNo. 5 zipper,\u201d bulk purchasing can technically follow the BOM and still produce a different result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same applies to buckle assemblies, shoulder-strap hardware and logo badges. Separate rows are useful when parts can change independently, come from different sources or require separate approval. A single assembly row can be sufficient when the complete assembly is sourced and controlled as one reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no virtue in maximum row count. The right split is the one that preserves identity and change control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Control_color_by_material_and_finish_not_only_by_color_name\"><\/span>Control color by material and finish, not only by color name<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same named color can appear different on woven fabric, coated fabric, webbing, zipper tape, molded plastic and plated metal. A BOM should not imply that one color code automatically produces a visual match across all substrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Record the target and approval method for each relevant component. This may be a physical swatch, lab approval, master component, finish chip or other controlled reference. If a tonal relationship is acceptable rather than an exact visual match, state that decision rather than forcing the factory to infer it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Approved_alternatives_need_boundaries\"><\/span>Approved alternatives need boundaries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncontrolled substitutions are risky, but banning every alternative can make sourcing unnecessarily rigid. Use one of three statuses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>No substitute:<\/strong> the nominated item is mandatory.<\/li><li><strong>Alternative with buyer approval:<\/strong> the factory may propose an option, but cannot use it until approved.<\/li><li><strong>Defined equivalent permitted:<\/strong> the BOM states the characteristics that an alternative must meet and the evidence required.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bagslebon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/weak-vs-controlled-bag-bom.png\" alt=\"Weak and controlled bag BOM descriptions compared\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cSame quality\u201d is not a substitute rule. State which characteristics must remain equivalent and who approves the change.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an alternative affects appearance, construction, function or measurements, update the connected records and sample decision. Do not change only the supplier name in the BOM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keep_the_BOM_synchronized_with_drawings_and_samples\"><\/span>Keep the BOM synchronized with drawings and samples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common development failure is a physically correct sample supported by outdated files. The sample maker may have followed a message that never reached the BOM. The purchasing team later buys according to the released document, not according to the sample maker\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After every approved material or component change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>update the BOM row and revision;<\/li><li>update affected drawing callouts;<\/li><li>update color, artwork or construction pages if necessary;<\/li><li>record which sample contains the change;<\/li><li>state whether the old item can still be used;<\/li><li>close or carry forward the approval status.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/bagslebon.com\/why-bag-drawing-is-not-enough-for-production\/\">why a bag drawing is not enough for production<\/a> shows how these files form one production package. See <a href=\"https:\/\/bagslebon.com\/why-two-bag-factories-quote-different-prices\/\">why two bag factories quote different prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"BOM_release_checklist\"><\/span>BOM release checklist<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before using the BOM for quotation, sampling or bulk release, check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>every visible and hidden controlled component is listed;<\/li><li>every row has a stable ID and location;<\/li><li>material and hardware descriptions are specific enough for the project;<\/li><li>color and finish references are identified;<\/li><li>nominated and factory-sourced items are distinguished;<\/li><li>usage basis is clear where it affects purchasing or packing;<\/li><li>alternatives have an approval rule;<\/li><li>sample status and approved references are traceable;<\/li><li>drawings use the same item IDs;<\/li><li>superseded items are not left active;<\/li><li>packaging and labels are included where the product BOM controls them;<\/li><li>revision and release status are visible.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bagslebon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/bag-bom-release-checklist.png\" alt=\"Bag bill of materials release checklist\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Release the BOM as part of the controlled product package, not as an isolated spreadsheet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_buyers_should_send_to_a_manufacturer\"><\/span>What buyers should send to a manufacturer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a useful BOM review, send the current drawings, material or component references, color requirements, intended quantity, target market, known supplier constraints and the latest sample status.
